The Woodstock Mysteries
Cosy crime with a sharp edge
Start here → The Premise
Two formidable women — Hester Croft, a sharp-minded former MI5 operative who controls the darkness inside herself, and Gertie Bundle, a bawdy, warm-hearted pub landlady with an instinct for reading people — investigate murders in their small Oxfordshire market town. Operating outside the official police investigation, they use social intelligence, gossip networks, and sheer force of personality to uncover the truth. The series balances cosy village charm with genuine psychological darkness.
Meet the Detectives
Hester Croft
Former MI5 operative turned amateur detective
Pale blue eyes, slightly hooked nose, thin frame. Blunt, analytical, with a dark sense of humour. Carries a walking stick that conceals a blade — her father's sword stick, the weapon her sister used to kill him. Every day she chooses not to use it. Quotes nursery rhymes. Leans into the 'frightening old woman' stereotype when it suits her.
Gertie Bundle
Pub landlady and information gatherer
Deep brown eyes, dumpy, bandy-legged, with an expression of 'near-terminal good nature.' Jolly, broadminded, bawdy. Natural storyteller. Runs The Old Pyed Bull Inn, which doubles as the town's intelligence hub. Fierce protector of her children. Her warmth is the counterweight to Hester's darkness.
